My tag line, “Wool Appliqué Art Designed for Distinction,” really defines the way I think, that this handcraft is truly an art form that stands out from the rest! And, it is one that I desire all skill levels of artisans to attempt their hand at, and journey through to having a completed piece that they are inspired and delighted with!

My desire is that whether you actually hand sew one of my original designs, or make the opportunity available for others to do so through retailing my patterns, that both the process of stitching a piece and the finished art brings enjoyment and a smile to the stitcher, the seller and all those who see the framed picture, door hanger or “penny rug.”

New Earth Designs

"Rug hooking patterns, dyed wool spots, swatches and yardages."

New Earth Designs is a pattern business for traditional rug hooking. It was started over 24 years ago by Anne Ashworth, sold to Jeanette and Maureen Rugar of New York, and since 1992 has been owned by me, Jeanne Benjamin.

The over 300 patterns in the catalogue are of all different design types, from gorgeous orientals to pictorials, folk art and primitive. Most of the designs are silk screened for clear dark lines, and they are printed on the backing as straight as possible, with serged edges. Patterns are available on your choice of backing, either monks cloth, rug warp, or linen. If a photo is available, the pattern will come to you with it!

"one-of-a-kind hooked creations for your home"

Off Soundings Design is proud to offer one-of-a-kind hooked creations you won't find anywhere else. We combine the fine-hooking materials and techniques of previous generations with up-to-date versions of primitive and traditional designs to create distinctive and classic items for your home. Our studio is located in beautiful, historic Rhode Island and we are pleased to continue in the footsteps of our foremothers in bringing warmth, light and heart into homes everywhere.

Each of our original designs is drawn by hand, without templates, so each is unique. The color palettes vary from item to item as well. As we are fond of saying, like fingerprints, our designs can look similar but no two are ever identical.

We offer a number of finished hooked items and collections: pillows, draft stoppers, tea cozies, trivet surrounds, coasters, holiday mittens and stockings. Each one, as individual as its owner, is sure to become a favorite, to be passed on from generation to generation.
