How to Calculate Wool Needed for a Braided Rug
Using flannel weight wool with strips that are 1 1/2” wide you will need a yard of 54” inch wide wool to complete a square foot of rug.
If you are using coat weight wool, or wider strips, you will need more yardage per square foot. It is probably safer to estimate a yard and a half of wool per square foot of rug.
To calculate approximately how much wool needed multiply the width and length of the finished rug to get the total number of yards needed. For example a 3’ x 5’ rug would need 15 yards of fabric.
Using Barbara Fisher’s method of rug braiding, we use patterns that tell us how many sets (a set is 3 loops of braid) are in each row. We know that we can get 130 sets of braid out of 1/4 yard of flannel weight wool. We do a row by row color plan of the rug and then calculate how much wool we need of each fabric.
